June is National Cancer Survivor Month, a time dedicated to celebrating and recognizing cancer survivors, inspiring those newly diagnosed, and, most importantly, honoring life.
Throughout this month, cancer survivors and their supporters unite across communities worldwide to raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by survivors. It’s a time for celebration, whether you’re a survivor, family member, friend, or medical professional. This month provides an opportunity for everyone living with a history of cancer to connect, celebrate milestones, and acknowledge those who have supported them throughout their journey. It also serves to highlight the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship, advocating for more resources, research, and survivor-friendly policies to enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors.
Thanks to advancements in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and follow-up care, more people than ever are surviving the disease. According to the latest data from the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, over 18 million people in the United States alone are living as cancer survivors.
However, surviving cancer often brings a host of challenges. Survivors may face issues such as limited access to specialized care and new treatments, denial of health and life insurance coverage, employment difficulties, and financial burdens from medical expenses and lost wages. Additionally, cancer survivors are at an increased risk for developing secondary cancers and other health conditions.
