November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating communities about the importance of lung health, prevention, and early detection. At Louisville CyberKnife, we’re joining the national effort to raise awareness and provide access to cutting-edge, noninvasive treatments for patients across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
While lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths, advancements in screening and radiation therapy are offering more hope than ever before. Detecting cancer early gives patients more treatment options and significantly improves outcomes.
Risks of Lung Cancer
Anyone with lungs can develop lung cancer–smokers, former smokers, and even nonsmokers. The most common causes include:
- Tobacco use (the leading risk factor)
- Secondhand smoke exposure
- Radon gas, a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in many homes
- Air pollution and occupational exposure
- Family history or genetic predisposition
Kentucky historically reports some of the highest lung cancer rates in the country, which makes awareness and regular screening especially critical for our local community.
The Role of Low-Dose CT Screening
Early detection can save lives, and low-dose CT (LDCT) scans are the most effective way to identify lung cancer before symptoms appear. The screening takes only minutes and uses much less radiation than a standard CT scan.
You may qualify for a lung cancer screening if you:
- Are 50–80 years old, and
- Have a history of 20 or more pack-years of smoking, and
- Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, and
- Are in good enough health to undergo potential treatment if lung cancer is detected
Talk to your doctor about whether a lung cancer screening is right for you. Louisville CyberKnife works closely with area hospitals and imaging providers to support patients from diagnosis through treatment.
